I had the privilege of teaching my Pocket Urban Sketching workshop to three groups of international sketchers during the 9th Urban Sketchers Symposium held in Porto a few days ago. The scenic rivertown in North Portugal is known for its wine industry and historic city center. For sketchers, it couldn’t be a better playground. From iron bridges to Baroque architecture, everywhere you looked offered interesting views to draw. The site I chose for my workshop was the majestic Torre dos Clérigos, a 250-feet tower that was the tallest building in Portugal when it was erected in the 1750s. My students did a fabulous job fitting the grand building into the small pages of the pocket sketchbooks provided by Stillman & Birn. Thanks to everyone who selected my workshop among the impressive lineup of classes offered at the event. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
