All these years in the Pacific Northwest have taught me never to let rain dampen my sketching plans. Unless is cold and windy, there’s always a place to take shelter: an entryway, a store awning, a covered passage. And sometimes these locations offer views that can be more interesting to sketch than the picture-perfect angles that appear in the postcards.
It drizzled most of the time during the two three-hour workshops I taught in Bellingham yesterday, but that only made for a more authentic experience of this coastal town close the Canadian border. To avoid the rain, I led my workshop participants to different covered spots, including a drive-thru alleyway where we set up comfortably to draw an unusual view of the historic Mount Baker Theater. The sketch that leads this post shows that view. Below are some other photos from a gray but enjoyable day spent in the company of a terrific group of urban sketchers.
